Compound Bows are used by both archers and hunters alike, but prior to their existence the main bow type they used were longbows and recurve bows. Hunters used mainly recurves for their added power whereas target archers used either depending on the requirement. This soon changed however when the compound bow arrived.

Compound bows go from strength to strength every year and the main manufacturers usually have their own patents and designs for getting the most of their products. This is why there are usually dedicated followers to different makes.

Bows can use entirely different cam systems which are the pulleys that help to propel the arrow at great speeds. The cam also helps to remove a lot of the tension build up in the string which makes it a lot easier for the user to aim and hold their short without exerting too much energy. This is one of the reasons why you can get more accurate shots off over a longer period of time.

One unique feature over other bows is that you can change the draw strength and size by making small adjustments to the cams. This means that one bow can be a universal tool for different situations and can also be used by more than one person.

The main disadvantage of a compound bow is that you cannot easily restring your own bow. In order to do this you need to use a special clamp called a bow press. Due to the force that is held in the string, and even more so the limbs, if you do not use one you can seriously harm yourself. Most people do not own one and since it requires training to use a bow press you would need to take it to a specialist bow store to have it restringed. It is also virtually impossible to get the limbs in place for restrining without one.

Compound bows are here to stay and although some might think they are unsightly they are the most advanced type of bow available. If you are considering taking up archery either for hunting or target shooting then a compound bow is highly recommended.
